About Yushima Seido
In order to promote the studies of the Tokugawa Godai Shogun Tsunayoshi built a basilica on the ground of 1690 and moved the shrines of the Udono and Hayashi, who were in the private residence of Ueno Shinobugaoka, here. This is the beginning of the current Yushima basilica.
Then, in 1797, about 100 years later, as a Shogunate school under the direct control of the Shogunate School, the world famous Shoheizaka Academy (known as Shohei School) was opened.
The Yushima basilica was designated as a national historic site in 1922, but the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 occurred the following day, leaving the Nyutoku-mon and the water store slightly and burning everything out.
This reconstruction was led by the school community, and in 1935 the design of Dr. Tokyo Imperial University Ito Chuta and the construction of Obayashi Co., Ltd. made the reinforced concrete structure reminiscent of the old system of the Kansei period by the construction of Obayashi Corporation. This building is the current Yushima Cathedral.
