About Nicholas-Do

The church of the Orthodox Church of Japan, which rises to the south of JR Ochanomizu Station.

It was founded in 1891 by the Greek Catholic Archbishop t.Nicholas (Kasatkin), and has since been called by the name of the Nicholas-Do.

The building was designed by the Russian artist Schullupov and modified by J. Condor. The plane is a Greek cross-shaped, byzantine, brick construction. The central dome is about 38 m high, and there is a spire-like belfry.

The present building was restored in 1949 after the Great Kanto Earthquake. The dome seen high on the Surugadai hill is familiar with the sound of the bell.
