Koenji Awaodori held on August 24 and 25, 2019.

The 63rd Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori will be held at Koenji in Suginami-ku, Tokyo on August 24th (Sat) and August 25th (Sun), 2019.

Koenji’s Awa dance began in 1957 in opposition to the Tanabata Festival held in the neighboring town of Asagaya.
The event was initially attended by only 38 participants and 2,000 spectators, but has now grown to mobilize nearly 1 million spectators, with approximately 10,000 dancers taking part in two days.

It has become a summer feature of Tokyo.

The feature of Koenji Awaodori is that you can enjoy a different atmosphere for each performance hall.
If you want to watch powerful dance near the dancers, we recommend shopping streets on the north and south sides of Koenji Station.

Also, if you want to watch a formation that uses a lot of wide streets or dance with a sense of openness, it is good to go along the main street on the south side of Koenji Station.

Furthermore, during the afternoon of Koenji Awa Odori, from around noon to around 16:00, dances are performed at each shopping street, so it seems fun to go out for a walk around the city.
During the period, you can also open food stalls at the Koenji North Exit Square and the South Exit Central Park, where you can enjoy summer festival gourmet and local delicacies.

The Awa Odori Ren series progresses in an “eight-shaped” pattern between JR Koenji Station and Shin-Koenji Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line.
